The course is divided into four units:
Week One: Foundations
In the first week, in a classroom setting, students will research the authors, artists, novels, and works of art they will be experiencing. A foundation of art history, spanning from the classical period to post-modernism will be explored through literature, movies and virtual gallery tours. Writing and image development strategies will also be introduced and explored.
Week Two: Experience
Students respond to the history, art and culture of Paris. Specific writers, artists, and styles of literature and art will be examined on location in both private and public museums, galleries and cultural centres.
Week Three: Expressions
Students write, draw, and paint in the French countryside while experiencing the culture and landscape of their rural setting. Students will be encouraged to evaluate artwork and literature where the location of the writing or art work becomes important to establish the historical impact on the creative process itself. Critiquing and peer response will be a strong component in the evaluation procedures of this course. Written and visual personal responses will be compiled into a portfolio.
Week Four: Realization
During the last week of this course, again in a classroom setting, students will be given the opportunity to complete their visual and written works to form a final product that reflects their creative process and personal voice. Finally, students will be expected to submit a series of specified assignments that culminate in a portfolio of work that reflects both an understanding of the written word and the power of visual imagery to successfully complete the course.
